THE POEMS

Victoria Topeca.jpg

Forthcoming from The University of Tulsa’s Nimrod and Mullerhaus Legacy, Reverse Selfie is a book of 30 poems and 30 images by over a dozen Oklahoma fine artists.

Each poem features a Tulsa area landmark or hallmark, focusing on the mystery of the city the author was reared. And as the name suggests, the poems turn the perspective away from the typical sense of self to search extrinsic surroundings.

The poems in Reverse Selfie originated as a donation from poet Victoria McArtor to Tupelo Presses’ 30/30 project, a month long poem-a-day fundraising event.

This collection acknowledges ‘Everyone is alone’ but continues, ‘at least we’re sitting close together,’ driven together out of inevitable rains, or drawn together by the sharing of the sun that is solar electricity. While McArtor’s poems illuminate a vision uniquely her own, their spark should spread wide.

Thought not only molds our character but is responsible for the changes in communities, the building of cities, the shaping of nations, and all of the great events that take place in the world.

This is where MUSED. steps in.

The same extrinsic thinking methodology of this book are coming off the page and into a state-wide high school creative writing and visual arts workshop.

The goal of The Reverse Selfie Project is to give students a moment to think deeply about the perception their images create, reminding them to search extrinsically toward the advancement of our community with as much obsession as we view ourselves.

YOU

We need your help to launch our 6-week extrinsic-thinking Tulsa Public School creative writing workshop.

Narcissist’s aren’t good for society, and yet we continue to make stupid people famous.

How many issues could be solved if we were only willing to think? The trouble is that we very often resort to all sorts of devices in order not to think, because thinking is such hard work.

We’re not advocating for everyone to be poets. But, if our youth were to develop a habit for concentration, they will have a greater chance of curing our cancer, securing our social security, or cleaning up our planet.

Your donation to us today isn’t only funding the publishing costs of our book.

You’re investing into the mental health of our future -- a more empathetic, mindful, and community driven society.
