VERSES FROM THE BUNKER
Veterans of all ages are invited to join a workshop called Verses from the Bunker. This 6-week reading and writing workshop at the Coffee Bunker will be led by Bill McCloud (MUSED. Ambassador, published poet, and Vietnam veteran) and co-created by Victoria McArtor (MUSED. co-founder and curriculum developer).
The Coffee Bunker provides resources to veterans and their families for employment, education, and transitioning to civilian life. Following the Veterans Writing Project’s model, Tulsa’s poetry and collaborative arts nonprofit, MUSED. will provide no-cost writing seminars and workshops for veterans.
GOAL #1 / LITERARY
We will expose local Vets to a new wave of literature being published by veterans and their families, so they may experience the shared empathy among their fellow servicemen and women.
GOAL #2 / SOCIAL
By painting a picture of where they’ve been and where they’re going, Veterans will inspire each other’s trajectories during our workshops.
GOAL #3 / THERAPEUTIC
Expose Veterans to the therapeutic art of poetry. Returning warriors have known for centuries the healing power of narrative. We give veterans the skills they need to capture their stories and do so in an environment of mutual trust and respect.
Through the texts we read, Veterans learn dig under the military jargon, break through the surface level of their emotions, and flesh out their anxiety by speaking uniquely about their experiences. Verses from the Bunker is free and open to the public. Members should plan to attend each 6 workshops of the series.
